Short answer

How Majority Rules works

Read one question aloud. Everyone secretly writes the short answer they think most of the room will choose. Reveal together. Everyone in the biggest matching group scores 1 point.

There is no correct answer. You are trying to predict the room, not answer the question objectively.

See a scoring example ↓

How to play

You need the questions, scrap paper and a pen for each player. Pass the reader role around the table each round.

  1. 1

    Read a question

One player reads a question aloud.

  2. 2

    Write your answer

Everyone secretly writes the short answer they think most of the room will choose.

  3. 3

    Reveal together

Show every answer at the same time. Everyone in the biggest matching group scores 1 point.

  • Priya+1
    Pavlova
  • Tom+1
    Pavlova
  • Sam+1
    Pavlova
  • Ava0
    Halloumi
Pavlova is the biggest matching group, so Priya, Tom and Sam score 1 point each.

Winning: first to 8 points wins.If tied players reach 8 on the same round, keep playing until one of those tied players scores and the others don't.

Ties: if two answers tie for the biggest group, everyone in both groups scores.

Close enough: answers count as a match when the table agrees they mean the same thing.

What makes a good Majority Rules question?

The best questions sit in the middle. Too obvious and everybody writes the same answer. Too broad and nobody matches. A good question gives the room a handful of believable answers and makes you decide which one everyone else will reach for first.

Too obvious

What colour is grass?

There is effectively one answer, so there is nothing to predict.

Too broad

What is something people like?

The answer space is almost unlimited, so matching becomes luck.

Good

What snack disappears fastest at a party?

There are several obvious contenders, but the group can still converge.

BanterBox Majority Rules

Want questions that sound like your group?

These are ready-made questions anyone can play. BanterBox also builds questions around your person's favourites, habits and stories, alongside general questions that keep the game varied.

Generic

What time do most people actually leave a party?

Personalised (fictional example)

What time is Ava actually walking out the front door?

Personal details only go in when they still create a fair Majority Rules round. The game should never turn into trivia that only one friend understands.
